The turnover process is integral to the efficiency of the OR and can lead to an improvement in available OR time to increase volumes. We have found success in this area by instituting and leading a Process Improvement Team for each service line. This involves a weekly meeting attended by our anesthesia service team leader along with the OR managers or schedulers on the service. They would review the schedule for the next week and make changes in the interest of efficiency. A typical change might include rearranging the order of the arthroscopy patients to limit the need to rearrange the equipment in the room for surgeries on opposite limbs. As a marker of our success, our turnover times are between 18 and 23 minutes.
OR utilization is the key to making room for growth through increasing case volumes. Through our pay for performance model, our physicians’ incomes increase directly as the case volumes increase.
