ApolloMD Announces 2018 EM Residency Scholarship Winner

Annual Emergency Medicine Scholarship

EM Residency Scholarship

EM Residency ScholarshipATLANTA, Ga. (July 1, 2018) – ApolloMD is honored to announce the recipient of its first ApolloMD Emergency Medicine Scholarship, Loren Touma.

“The work our young physician colleagues do is absolutely incredible –  the challenge of balancing long hours early in your career as you find yourself as a physician can be exhausting and exhilarating. Our hope is to develop and expand this scholarship program as a way to pay it forward. We want physicians to pursue their passion in the clinical practice of Emergency Medicine.” said Yogin Patel, MD, President. “ApolloMD’s goal is to reward young physicians for their focus on providing top-quality care to the communities they serve.”

Loren Touma received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida in Orlando. She is a fourth-year student at the William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Loren has a passion for leadership development holding several positions on campus including Mississippi Osteopathic Medical Association Student Director, Student Government Association President, Class Council President, Gold Humanism Honor Society Chapter Founder and President and Omega Beta Iota National Membership Chair. In addition to her leadership roles, she is an active member of the College of Osteopathic Medicine’s EM Club, where she has had the opportunity to participate in mass casualty drills, suture clinics and attend national conferences.

“I feel honored and humbled to be selected for the first ApolloMD Emergency Medicine Residency Scholarship. This scholarship will aid me in my journey towards becoming the best emergency medicine physician I can be,” said Touma. “In the future, my goal is to work in a leadership role as an advocate on behalf of the medical profession at both the grassroots and national level. As a hopeful emergency medicine resident, I look forward to incorporating my leadership skills and experience with the practice of medicine to support my peers and prospective patients.”

Applicants are required to be in good standing with a US allopathic or osteopathic medical school, as well as pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine. Candidates must also be participating in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Other determining factors include scholarly achievements, leadership and membership involvement with accredited medical societies/organizations and philanthropic commitments.

Approximately 86 percent of medical school graduates are burdened with loan debts, according to the American Medical Student Association. In 2017, the average medical school graduate incurred approximately $189,000 in student loans. ApolloMD intends to lessen the financial burden for one outstanding resident each year.

“At ApolloMD we know the future of healthcare lies in the hands of dedicated resident physicians who work hard to learn the practice of medicine,” said Michael Dolister, MD, Chief Executive Officer. “We hope by offering this annual scholarship we can reduce a small portion of the financial burden for years to come.”

The 2019 scholarship application will open January 1 with a deadline of June 15. For information, or to apply for 2019, visit apollomd.com.
