Medical Director Jay Nichols, MD Recognized at Saint Francis Hospital
August 11, 2014 – ApolloMD is excited to congratulate Jay Nichols, MD, who has been named Physician of the Month by Saint Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Nichols serves as Medical Director, overseeing the emergency departments at both of Saint Francis Hospital’s campuses and was recognized as a result of nominations from Medical Staff Team members.
Recently, Dr. Nichols developed and implemented an action plan which has led to significant improvements in emergency department metrics including throughput, patient satisfaction, and clinical quality. As part of the initiative, Dr. Nichols conducted a flow study and found that the physical layout of the emergency department could be optimized to enhance flow. The distance from triage to intake, 88 feet round trip, added up to 7,040 feet walked per day, and 487 miles annually.
In addition to optimizing physical space, Dr. Nichols adjusted coverage and implemented a Chest Pain Observation Unit in order to facilitate outpatient management of CHF and low-risk chest pain patients. An immediate improvement in wait times and LWBS (left without being seen) patients occurred as a result. Today, throughput times continue to decline, as the patient volume has reached record levels for the department.
Several of the comments from Dr. Nichols’ nominations included, “Dr. Nichols has helped with ER flow and has been a great asset to the ER, staff, and our patients,” and “We are fortunate to have him on our Saint Francis Team!”
In addition to his recent Saint Francis Hospital recognition, Dr. Nichols was named one of ApolloMD’s Directors of the Year in 2013. Congratulations to Dr. Nichols, and thank you for your dedication to the team at Saint Francis, ApolloMD, and most of all, your patients!
