Earlier this year, 42 percent of physicians reported feeling “burned out.” The prevalence of emotional exhaustion among clinicians was at epidemic levels before the pandemic and continues to increase as extra workload, risk of exposure, long hours, and stress levels climb.
The associated clinical consequences are severe and can include increased medical errors, risk of malpractice, and reduced patient experience scores and quality of care. The personal consequences for providers and staff can be even more damaging, including depression, self-harm, and negative impacts to families and healthcare communities.
