The Problem

With more than 50,000 reads per year and only one full-time radiologist, WellStar West Georgia Medical Center, formerly West Georgia Health, was experiencing many challenges in the imaging department. The department needed a solution that would decrease turnaround times and unread exams, and in turn, increase revenue.

The Solution

In August 2009, ApolloMD began providing imaging services to WGMC. Immediately, the ApolloMD team started working with hospital leadership to discuss developing a team of full-time radiologist. With a team of full-time radiologist, the use of Locum providers was eliminated. A new compensation model was implemented that paid the radiologist on a 100% performance-based system. This allowed for their incentives to align with those of the hospital.

The Result

ApolloMD has successfully recruited and retained a core team of full-time radiologists who perform interventional procedures, with access to 23 sub-specialties through teleradiology. No longer required to look outside of the hospital for specialty reads, patients have been drawn to the imaging department at WGMC, leading to a significant increase in volume, and in turn, revenue.

  • Providers: Increased from 1 Radiologist and Locums providers to 3 Full-time Radiologist
  • Overall Turnaround Time: Decreased from 475 minutes to 120 minutes, 75% improvement
  • Unread Exams per Day: Decreased from 95/day to 0/day; first time WGMC had 100% of exams turned around within a 24 hour period
  • Volume: Increased from 58,000 reads to 74,000 reads; 28% increase in volume
