The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is a federal agency that administers the Medicare program and works in partnership with state government agencies to administer Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and HealthCare.gov. CMS makes sure beneficiaries in these programs are able to receive high-quality healthcare.

In addition, CMS is responsible for the oversight of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) administrative simplification transaction standards and code sets, security standards, health identifiers, quality standards, clinical laboratory quality standards and more.
