The healthcare environment is more complex now than ever. With more advancements, tools and information at their fingertips doctors have an overwhelming job to diagnose and treat their patients every day. Today, we would like to say thank you to all of our ApolloMD physicians for taking all of those late night patient calls, working long hours and always providing top-quality patient care. To celebrate National Doctors Day, we are looking back on some of our physician’s accomplishments, stories, big moments, events and advice to others.

Andrew Wyman, MD – Dr. Andrew Wyman pays a visit to the ApolloMD booth at ACEP. Dr. Wyman started with ApolloMD on the STRIKE Travel Team right out of residency. He is now the assistant medical director at Carolinas Healthcare System Union in Monroe, N.C.

Billy Cox, MD – Dr. William “Billy” Cox was named the 2016 Physician of the Year at LewisGale Hospital Montgomery. Congratulations, Dr. Cox!

David Buxton, MD – “This specialty of medicine is influential not only in my practice, but in my life,” said Buxton. “I am appreciative of all of the small things and lucky to know I have more time in life- something most of my patients do not have. My goal at the end of the day is to make sure my patients can live the last chapter of their lives with their loved ones and as comfortably as possible.”

Dr. Doug Nederostek – Dr. Doug Nederostek and his wife attended the Scotland Memorial Hospital Ritz Ball. Dr. Nederostek currently serves as Scotland Memorial Hospital’s ED Medical Director.

Gene Woods, president and CEO of Carolinas HealthCare System, recently visited Scotland Health Care System to meet, listen and learn from many of the hospital’s staff, including Dr. Doug Nederostek, ApolloMD Emergency Center Medical Director.

Dr. Areadne Soler and Dr. Rafael Sanchez-Yriarte – Dr. Areadne Soler and Dr. Rafael Sanchez-Yriarte were both nominated as Tenet Physician of the Year! What an honorable nomination for two deserving physicians.

Dr. Eskandari and Dr. Andrew Kassinove – Dr. Eskandari and Dr. Andrew Kassinove supported the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association’s annual CV Heart & Stroke Walk!

Dr. Robert Wright – Dr. Robert Wright named as the Interim ED Medical Director at Skiff Medical Center which was recently named as one of the 100 Top Rural and Community Hospitals.

Dr. Rogers – Dr. Rogers was selected as a member of the Bylaw, Credentials & Medical Executive Committee at Grandview Medical Center. This election involves a four year membership. He will serve the first two years on the committee and the third and fourth year as the committee’s chairman.

Dr. Rolando Torres & Dr. Boykin Robinson – Dr. Rolando Torres and Dr. Boykin Robinson attended the Georgia College of Emergency Physicians Meeting together in celebration of a very special accomplishment. Dr. Torres was named the GCEP ED Director of the Year. A great honor for a great medical director! Dr. Torres currently serves as the ED Medical Director at University Hospital McDuffie.

Dr. Tuono & Dr. Patolia – Dr. Harsukh Patolia and Dr. Albert Tuono were recognized as a gold winners in the Hospitalist category for Best Bedside Manner by OurHealth Roanoke & New River Valleys Magazine. Congratulations to you both!

Dr. Ed Malcolm – By the time most doctors reach their 70s — especially those in the fast-paced emergency room settings — they have already thrown in the towel. But not Floyd Medical Center’s Ed Malcolm. At 74, he is still going strong.

“It’s hard to retire,” Malcolm said. “I keep saying I’m going to, but then …”

But then he keeps full-time hours in FMC’s emergency room, working 11 to 12 hours at a time 14 or 15 times a month.

GAHE Jeremy Nelson – Dr. Jeremy Nelson represented ApolloMD and WellStar Cobb Hospital during the GAHE patient experience discussion luncheon. An opportunity that allowed for discussion amongst other industry experts and healthcare executives statewide.

Grandview Holiday Party – Our physicians and APCs celebrated the holiday season together over dinner.

Hijinion Carreon, MD – “I work with one of the best group of providers in the country. The best part is creating an environment where colleagues feel empowered to voice their own ideas and opinions; the results I’ve seen from this kind of empowerment is phenomenal!” When asked what he focused on with his team, Dr. Carreon answered this : “Friendship and camaraderie within the department and myself. Building relationships with your team is important. We work as a cohesive group. My team knows that I do not just serve as the title on my badge, but I represent them and their voice, not just my interest.”

Jigar Patel, MD – Dr. Jigar Patel was selected as the Secretary Treasurer for WellStar North Fulton Hospitall. On this leadership track, he will serve four years before becoming Medical Staff President. Congratulations, Dr. Patel!

Joseph Joyce, MD – Dr. Joseph Joyce was recognized as the gold winner in the Emergency Medicine category for Best Bedside Manner by OurHealth Roanoke & New River Valleys Magazine. Congratulations, Dr. Joyce!

Keia Hewitt, MD – When asked what advice she would give to a young physician about pursuing clinical leadership, Dr. Hewitt said “Prepare.  If you are interested in clinical leadership invest time in the preparation.  Volunteer for positions, read, get involved at your hospital, join local, regional and national organizations and stay engaged.  If an opportunity is presented, accept it and work hard.”

Dr. Luke Espelund – Dr. Luke Espelund was awarded the Meritorious Service Award for 2016 at Mercy Medical Center. This exceptional award recognizes a Mercy Medical Center Emergency Department provider who demonstrates an exceptional job performance and who embodies the attributes of empathy, teamwork, initiative, and excellence! Congratulations, Dr. Espelund!

Matt Astin – Regional Medical Director, Dr. Matt Astin participated in a number of speaking opportunities this year! Here he is pictured at ACOEP’s Scientific Assembly.

St. Francis Holiday Party – Our team at St. Franics spending quality time outside of the hospital to celebrate the holiday season!

Steve Currier and team – Dr. Steve Currier, ApolloMD Medical Director at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga., and the University Hospital team broke ground on what will be the new emergency department. This is expected to be a three-year, $30 million Emergency Department Expansion and Renovation.

Dr. John Wood – When asked about what lead Dr. John Wood to emergency medicine, he replied “Growing up I knew I was going to be one of two things: a doctor or a lawyer. At first, I thought I wanted to be a pediatrician. One day during clinical rotations, I was standing in the middle of the emergency department with chaos all around me, that’s when I decided on emergency medicine. The constant hustle and fast-paced atmosphere felt like home. Being able to take care of almost anything was what drew me in.”
